Scanning a QR code from an image or screenshot
A camera cannot help with a code that is already on your screen — a payment code sent over WhatsApp, an event pass in your gallery, a code printed inside a PDF invoice. Upload the image instead and it is decoded the same way. This also covers the case of a code that is too small, too glossy or too badly lit to read across a room: photograph it close up, then upload the photo.
What this scanner reads
A QR code is a container for text. What that text means depends on how it starts, and each kind is shown differently here.

- The full address is shown before you open anything, so you can check where it actually goes.
- UPI payment codes
- The UPI ID, payee name and amount are pulled out and displayed. Pay from your own UPI app once you have checked them.
- WiFi codes
- Network name, security type and password, so you can join without being read a password across a room.
- Contact cards (vCard)
- Name, phone, email and company, with a download that saves straight into your contacts.
- Phone, SMS and email
- The number or address, ready to copy or dial.
- Plain text
- Anything else is shown exactly as it was encoded.
Is it safe to scan a QR code?
Reading a code is safe. A QR code cannot run anything by itself — it holds text, and this scanner shows you that text rather than acting on it.
The risk is in what you do next, and it is real: anyone can print a sticker and put it over a genuine code on a parking meter, a restaurant table or a shop counter. Two habits cover almost all of it. Read the address before you open it, and be suspicious if it does not match the business you are standing in front of. And when a code asks for a payment, check the payee name shown here against who you meant to pay before you open your UPI app — the name is written into the code by whoever created it.
Questions people ask
Do I need to install an app to scan a QR code?
No. This scanner runs in your browser and uses your phone or laptop camera directly. Most phones made in the last six years also read QR codes straight from the built-in camera app — point at the code and tap the notification that appears. A separate scanner app has not been necessary for years.
Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot or a saved image?
Yes. Choose Upload QR Image and pick any photo, screenshot or downloaded picture containing a QR code. This is the way to handle a code you were sent on WhatsApp, one printed in a PDF, or one on the same screen you are reading — you cannot point a phone at its own display.
Does scanning work without an internet connection?
Decoding happens on your device, so reading the code itself does not need a connection. Following what it contains does — a code holding a website address still needs data to open that page.
Is it safe to scan a QR code from a poster or a table?
Scanning is safe. Following what it contains is where the risk sits, because a QR code is just text and anyone can print a sticker over someone else's. Read the address before you open it: this scanner shows you the decoded value first and never opens anything on its own.
Can this scanner read a UPI payment QR code?
It decodes one and shows you the UPI ID, payee name and amount so you can check them. It does not make payments — use Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or your bank app for that. Checking a UPI code before paying is worth doing: the payee name is written into the code by whoever made it, and reading it here shows you which account the money would actually reach.
What happens to the codes I scan?
Your recent scans are kept in your own browser and nowhere else. Clearing the history removes them. We do not upload the images you scan or the values decoded from them.
