Send a WhatsApp Message Without Saving the Number

Every step between seeing your business and messaging it costs you enquiries, and saving a number is the step most people skip. A direct chat link removes it — one tap opens the conversation, with your first line already written.

Make your link

No sign-up. Nothing is sent anywhere — the link is built in your browser.

Pick the country, then type the number without the code.

Name the source here and every enquiry tells you where it came from.

Your link will appear here.

How to make one

  1. 1

    Pick the country

Choose from the dropdown. WhatsApp links have no local format, so the country code is never optional.

  2. 2

    Type your business number

Just the number, without the country code — 10 digits for India.

  3. 3

    Write the opening message

The line your customer sends you. Name the source — 'I saw your Instagram bio' — and you get attribution for free.

  4. 4

    Put the link to work

Copy it into your Instagram bio, Google Business Profile, email signature, invoices or paid ads.

Why it works

  • Customers reach you without saving your number first
  • The opening message is pre-written, so fewer people abandon halfway
  • A different message per placement tells you which one is working
  • Works on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web — no app or extension
  • Nothing is uploaded — the link is built in your browser
  • Free, and no WhatsApp Business account required

Why saving the number is where you lose the enquiry

Copy the number, open WhatsApp, create a contact, save it, find the chat, work out how to introduce yourself. Six steps, and a customer who is only mildly interested drops out at about the second. Displaying a number and hoping quietly costs more enquiries than most businesses realise, because the ones you lose never tell you.

A direct chat link collapses all of it into one tap, and the conversation still lands in your WhatsApp exactly like any other.

The customer has to message first — so make it easy

WhatsApp does not let a business open a conversation with someone who has not written to it. Not manually, and not with an auto-reply, a chatbot or an AI agent — every one of those can only respond to an inbound message. Whatever you have set up on your side is inert until the customer sends something.

That makes the pre-filled message more than convenience. It is what gets that first message actually sent rather than half-typed and abandoned, which is the moment your automation, your team and your response time all start to matter.

What the link actually is

https://wa.me/919911720247 — the domain, then the full international number with no plus, no spaces and no dashes. Add ?text= and a URL-encoded message to pre-fill the first line. There is nothing proprietary about it; the generator above is a convenience, not a service you depend on.

The one thing people get wrong is the country code. A number that works perfectly when you dial it locally produces a broken link, because WhatsApp resolves numbers globally and a bare ten digits is ambiguous.

Using it on Android, iPhone and desktop

On a phone the link opens the WhatsApp app directly. On a desktop it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app if you are signed in; if you are not, it shows a QR code for you to scan with your phone first. Nothing needs installing on any of them.

When you want a QR code instead

A link works where someone can tap it. For anything printed — a flyer, a shop window, a table card — you need the code instead, so the person holding a phone can reach you without typing. Our WhatsApp QR code generator makes one from the same number, and a tracked code will also tell you which poster actually brought the enquiries.

Common questions

How do I send a WhatsApp message without saving the number?
Open a link in the form https://wa.me/<number with country code>. WhatsApp treats it as a chat request and opens the conversation directly, without the number being added to your contacts. The generator on this page builds that link for you, and can attach a first message.
Does the customer know they did not save the number?
There is nothing to notice — the chat opens and the message sends like any other. Your business name shows in the header if you use a WhatsApp Business account; otherwise they see the number, exactly as they would have anyway.
Is this the same as click-to-chat or a wa.me link?
Yes — those are the same thing under different names. WhatsApp calls the feature click to chat; wa.me is the short domain it runs on. Some tools also use api.whatsapp.com/send, which behaves identically. This page builds the wa.me form because it is the shortest and the one WhatsApp itself documents.
Why does my number need the country code?
Because WhatsApp has no concept of a local number. wa.me/9911720247 is not an Indian number to WhatsApp, it is an invalid one, and the link opens to an error. That is why the country is a separate dropdown here rather than something you have to remember to type.
Can my auto-reply or AI agent message the customer first?
No. WhatsApp does not allow a business to open a conversation with someone who has not messaged it — auto-replies, chatbots and AI agents can only respond to an inbound message. This is why the pre-filled opening line matters: it gets the customer's message sent, which is what lets everything on your side reply at all.
Where should I put the link?
Anywhere someone can tap it: your Instagram or WhatsApp bio, Google Business Profile, email signature, invoices, paid ads and your website's contact button. Use a different opening message for each so the replies tell you which placement earns its keep. For anything printed, use a QR code instead — a link is useless on a poster.
Does WhatsApp charge for this?
No. Click-to-chat is a standard WhatsApp feature and free to use. It is not the WhatsApp Business API, which is a separate paid product for bulk and automated messaging.
Will it work if they have not saved my number?
Yes, in both directions. Neither side needs the other in their contacts for the chat to open.
